Short cruises from San Francisco: 4, 5 and 7-night trips, and no 3-day ones
The shortest cruise from San Francisco on this schedule is 4 nights, so there is no 3-day cruise from here. Carnival sails 16 4-night trips to Ensenada, Thursday to Monday, from spring to early autumn, and there are 4 trips of 5 nights and 6 of 7 nights, mostly on Ruby Princess. On 3 November 2026 starting fares were $513 for 4 nights, $769 for 5 and $900 for 7, per person with taxes and port fees included.

No 3-night cruise leaves San Francisco on this schedule, so a 3-day cruise from here is not an option. The shortest trips are Carnival's 4-night round trips to Ensenada, which leave on a Thursday afternoon and come back on Monday morning. Princess and Carnival also sail a few 5-night trips, and Ruby Princess sails week-long runs north to Victoria, Vancouver and Seattle in spring and autumn.
On 3 November 2026 the lowest 4-night fare was $513 per person, for the cheapest cabin listed with taxes and port fees included. The table at the end of this guide lists every sailing shorter than a week. The 7-night trips are not in it, and the Pacific Coast page lists them.
Are there 3 day cruises from San Francisco?
No. The shortest sailing on this schedule is 4 nights. The lines count in days, so Carnival sells its 4-night trip as a 4-Day Baja Mexico cruise, and that is the nearest thing to a 3-day cruise from here.
Distance is the reason. The port of Ensenada says most of the cruise ships it receives come from Los Angeles and Long Beach, and those ports are much closer. NOAA's table of U.S. port distances puts San Diego 455 nautical miles from San Francisco and 95 from Los Angeles, and Ensenada is further south still.
Carnival's own timing shows what that means. Its 4-night trip leaves at 4pm on Thursday and reaches Ensenada at 8am on Saturday, 40 hours later. Twice that is 80 hours, which is longer than a 3-night trip lasts, by our arithmetic. A 3-night round trip from here could not reach Ensenada and get back at that pace.
What are the 4 day cruises from San Francisco?
They are Carnival's 4-Day Baja Mexico cruises, 4 nights round trip with one port, Ensenada. The schedule has 16 of them, and Carnival's July 2025 release calls them extended-weekend sailings.
| Ship | Year | Sailings | First | Last |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Carnival Luminosa | 2027 | 7 | 13 May 2027 | 2 September 2027 |
| Carnival Legend | 2028 | 9 | 11 May 2028 | 31 August 2028 |
Every one follows the same week, which Carnival's itinerary page shows with the same times:
| Day | Carnival, 4 nights |
|---|---|
| Thursday | Leaves at 4pm |
| Friday | At sea |
| Saturday | Ensenada, 8am to 5pm |
| Sunday | At sea |
| Monday | Back at 8am |
The ships are here for the Alaska season, and the Baja trips fit between Alaska cruises. Each ship comes back from Alaska on a Thursday morning and often leaves for Ensenada that afternoon, so the 4-night dates fall about every other Thursday from May to early September. Nothing of 4 nights leaves between October and April. The 4-night page lists every date, and our Mexico guide describes Ensenada.
What are the 5 day cruises from San Francisco?
They are round trips of 5 nights with two ports. Princess sails them on Ruby Princess by way of San Diego, and Carnival Luminosa has one with Catalina Island.
| Day | Ruby Princess, 5 nights | Carnival Luminosa, 28 April 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Tuesday, leaves at 3pm | Wednesday, leaves at 4pm |
| 2 | At sea | At sea |
| 3 | San Diego | Avalon, Catalina Island, 7:30am to 4:30pm |
| 4 | Ensenada | Ensenada, 8am to 5pm |
| 5 | At sea | At sea |
| 6 | Back at 7am on Sunday | Back at 8am on Monday |
The Princess dates are 24 November 2026, 23 November 2027 and 25 April 2028. The two November sailings leave on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving and spend Thanksgiving Day in San Diego. Princess's California Coast page lists 5-day and 7-day round trips from San Francisco, and says its ships arrive in San Diego at the B Street Pier near the Gaslamp Quarter.
You cannot end the cruise in San Diego. Under the Passenger Vessel Services Act, as 19 CFR 4.80a sets it out, a passenger on a voyage that calls at a nearby foreign port such as Ensenada may not leave the ship at a U.S. port other than the one where they boarded. On 3 November 2026 the lowest 5-night fare was $769 per person.
Are there weekend cruises from San Francisco?
Not in the Friday-to-Sunday sense. No sailing shorter than a week on this schedule leaves on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday. The nearest is Carnival's Thursday-to-Monday trip, which Carnival itself calls an extended weekend.
If you work Monday to Friday, that trip costs you Thursday, Friday and Monday morning, because the ship leaves at 4pm on Thursday and is back at 8am on Monday. By the calendar it is a long weekend with a day added at the front.
Our weekend cruises page lists every sailing of any length that leaves on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday. From San Francisco those are 7 nights or longer, and they include Ruby Princess's week-long Pacific Northwest trips, which leave on a Saturday or Sunday and are back at 7am the same day a week later.
What are the 7 day cruises from San Francisco?
Most are Ruby Princess round trips to the Pacific Northwest, calling at Victoria, Vancouver and Seattle, on 17 April and 18 September 2027 and on 26 March and 2 April 2028. Ruby Princess also sails a week down the California coast on 19 March 2028, and Regent's Seven Seas Splendor sails one way to Vancouver on 17 May 2028.
| Day | Pacific Northwest | California coast, 19 March 2028 |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Leaves at 3pm | Leaves at 3pm |
| 2 | At sea | At sea |
| 3 | Victoria, 2pm to just before midnight | San Diego, 8am to 9pm |
| 4 | Vancouver, from 7:30am | Ensenada, 9am to 5pm |
| 5 | Seattle | Los Angeles, 7am to 7pm |
| 6 | At sea | Santa Barbara, 7am to 6pm |
| 7 | At sea | At sea |
| 8 | Back at 7am | Back at 7am |
NOAA puts Seattle 807 nautical miles from San Francisco, which is why the northern trip has two sea days on the way home. Princess says Santa Barbara is a tender port, so you go ashore by small boat there. On the northern trip you cannot leave the ship in Seattle, and CBP's first example of a violation of the Passenger Vessel Services Act is a passenger who boards in San Francisco and gets off in Seattle.
Regent's trip is different. It calls at Astoria, Seattle, Victoria and Nanaimo and ends in Vancouver on 24 May 2028, so you need a flight home. CBP says foreign vessels may carry passengers from a U.S. port to a foreign one, which is why the voyage can end in Canada. On 3 November 2026 the cheapest fare listed for it was a suite, at $7,899 per person, against $900 for the lowest Ruby Princess week.
No 7-night cruise from here reaches Alaska, Hawaii or the Mexican Riviera. Our Alaska guide and Hawaii guide explain why those take 10 and 15 nights or more.
Is a short cruise from San Francisco worth it?
It comes down to time ashore. A 4-night trip gives you two sea days and one port day, and the longer trips get closer to one port day for each day at sea.
| Length | Port days | Sea days | Lowest fare | Lowest per night |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 nights | 1 | 2 | $513 | $128 |
| 5 nights | 2 | 2 | $769 | $154 |
| 7 nights | 3 or 4 | 2 or 3 | $900 | $129 |
| 10 nights, Alaska | 4 or 5 | 4 or 5 | $996 | $100 |
The fares are the lowest on 3 November 2026, per person with taxes and port fees included, and they come from different ships and months. When we wrote this on 3 November 2026, the 5-night trips cost the most per night of these lengths, and the 10-night Alaska trips the least. The 16-night Hawaii trips were lower still, at $70 a night on 3 November 2026.
For a first cruise, or for a couple of days on the ship with one day in Mexico, the 4-night trip does the job at the lowest total price. If time ashore is what you want, the 5-night and 7-night trips give more of it for the money.
The extras weigh more on a short trip. When we checked on 3 November 2026, Carnival's recommended gratuity was $17 a day per guest in a standard cabin, which is $136 for two people on 4 nights by our arithmetic. The port says it provides no parking at the cruise terminals and points to Metropolis lots at 55 and 80 Francisco Street, and our parking guide has the details. The cheap and last-minute guide compares fares across the schedule.
When do short cruises leave San Francisco?
In spring, summer, early autumn and November. Between December and February nothing on this schedule is shorter than 16 nights.
- November. Ruby Princess's 5-night trips of 24 November 2026 and 23 November 2027, over Thanksgiving.
- March and April. Ruby Princess's 7-night trips in March and April 2028, its 5-night trip of 25 April 2028, its 7-night trip of 17 April 2027 and Carnival Luminosa's 5-night trip of 28 April 2027.
- May to early September. Carnival's 4-night trips, Carnival Luminosa in 2027 and Carnival Legend in 2028, plus Regent's one-way week of 17 May 2028.
- September. Ruby Princess's 7-night trip of 18 September 2027, at the end of its Alaska season.
The month pages, such as May 2027 and May 2028, list every departure by date, and our season guide compares the months.
Which pier do short cruises leave from?
Pier 27, the James R. Herman Cruise Terminal, on most dates. The port's schedule, which runs to 31 December 2027, puts Carnival Luminosa's 5-night trip of 28 April 2027 and its 4-night trip of 19 August 2027 at Pier 35, which the port says is a 6 to 8 minute walk north of Pier 27. Piers for 2028 are not published yet.
The port says Pier 27 is about a 20-minute walk from the Embarcadero BART and Muni station, and that taxis can drop passengers at the terminal entrance. It offers no luggage storage at the terminals, but it points to paid lockers at the California Welcome Center at Pier 39 if you arrive early. Our terminal guide has the rest.
Do you need a passport for a short cruise from San Francisco?
Usually not for the round trips, if you are a U.S. citizen. U.S. Customs and Border Protection calls a cruise that starts and ends at the same U.S. port a closed-loop cruise, and on one, U.S. citizens may present a government-issued photo ID with proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate. CBP adds that the countries the ship visits may still ask for a passport, so check with your cruise line.
The Regent trip to Vancouver is the exception. CBP says U.S. citizens need a passport to enter the United States by air from Canada, and that passport cards are not accepted for international air travel. Our documents guide covers both cases.
