Which cruises go from San Francisco to Hawaii?
Princess sails the 16-night trips on Ruby Princess, and Carnival adds a 15-night trip each September. The Port of San Francisco calls the city the homeport for both lines.
| Princess | Carnival | |
|---|---|---|
| Ship | Ruby Princess | Carnival Luminosa in 2027, Carnival Legend in 2028 |
| Nights | 16 | 15 |
| Sailings | 21 | 2 |
| Leaves | 8 November 2026 to 19 October 2028 | 17 September 2027 and 14 September 2028 |
| Days at sea | 10 | 9 |
| Hawaiian ports | 3 or 4 | 4 |
| Ensenada | Day 15 | Day 14, 3pm to 8pm |
| Back in San Francisco | 7am on day 17 | 8am on day 16 |
Princess says its round trips to Hawaii typically leave from Los Angeles or San Francisco and usually span 16 days or longer. Carnival's September 2026 release calls Carnival Legend's sailing of 14 September 2028 a 15-day Carnival Journeys Hawaii cruise.
The port's own schedule runs to 31 December 2027 and puts every Hawaii departure in that span at Pier 27, the James R. Herman Cruise Terminal. Piers for 2028 are not published yet. Our terminal guide explains how to check yours.
How many days at sea is a Hawaii cruise from San Francisco?
Ten on Ruby Princess and nine on Carnival: four on the way out, then five or four on the way back to Ensenada, and one more from Ensenada to San Francisco. A two-week trip gives you four port days in Hawaii.
The islands are a long way off. NOAA's table of U.S. port distances gives these figures in nautical miles, and a nautical mile is about 1.15 ordinary miles.
| From San Francisco to | Nautical miles |
|---|---|
| Hilo, Hawaii Island | 2,019 |
| Kahului, Maui | 2,036 |
| Honolulu, Oahu | 2,091 |
| Nawiliwili, Kauai | 2,128 |
The Ruby Princess sailings that start at Hilo leave San Francisco at 3pm and arrive at 8am on day 6, which works out at about 18 knots for 113 hours. That sum is ours.
Starting elsewhere in California barely changes this. NOAA puts Los Angeles 2,140 nautical miles from Hilo, about 120 more than San Francisco.
- Ruby Princess, 16 nights. Leaves at 3pm. Days 2 to 5 at sea, the islands on days 6 to 9, days 10 to 14 at sea, Ensenada on day 15, a last day at sea, and back at 7am on day 17.
- Carnival, 15 nights. Leaves at 4pm. Days 2 to 5 at sea, the islands on days 6 to 9, days 10 to 13 at sea, Ensenada from 3pm to 8pm on day 14, a last day at sea, and back at 8am on day 16.
These trips suit people who like the ship as much as the ports. If sea days bore you, ten of them will feel long.
Is there a 7-day cruise from San Francisco to Hawaii?
No. Nothing on this schedule reaches Hawaii in under 15 nights. A 7-night round trip to Hilo and back would mean 4,038 nautical miles in 168 hours, about 24 knots day and night with no time ashore, by our arithmetic. The itineraries on sale take four days just to get there.
The 7-night cruises that do leave San Francisco go north to Victoria, Vancouver and Seattle, or south along the California coast to Ensenada. Our short cruises guide covers them.
With only a week, the realistic way to cruise Hawaii is to fly there first. Norwegian says Pride of America sails year-round from Honolulu and visits four islands in seven days with no sea days, and it calls the ship the only U.S.-flagged cruise ship in Hawaii. This site lists only departures from San Francisco, so that ship is not on this schedule.
Which Hawaiian islands do cruises from San Francisco visit?
Every sailing calls at Honolulu on Oahu. Most also call at three more from this list: Hilo and Kona on Hawaii Island, Kahului on Maui and Nawiliwili on Kauai. The order changes from date to date. Princess's Hawaii page lists the same four islands.
- Honolulu. On every sailing. Most Ruby Princess calls run from 7am to 11pm, which leaves an evening ashore. The sailings of 11 and 27 January 2027 stay overnight and call at three ports instead of four. Carnival Luminosa's call in 2027 runs from 9am to 10pm and Carnival Legend's in 2028 from 7am to 8pm.
- Hilo and Kona. Both on Hawaii Island, and many sailings call at both.
- Kahului and Nawiliwili. Maui and Kauai. Each is missing from some dates, so read the ports on the row if one of them matters to you.
The other calls on these itineraries last 8 to 12 hours, usually starting between 7am and 10am. Four days ashore across a 16-night trip is not much, and that is the main thing to weigh before booking.
Why do Hawaii cruises from San Francisco stop in Ensenada?
Because of the Passenger Vessel Services Act. U.S. Customs and Border Protection summarizes the law, 46 U.S.C. 55103, as barring a vessel from carrying passengers between U.S. ports, directly or by way of a foreign port, unless it is wholly owned by U.S. citizens and has a coastwise endorsement.
CBP's guide gives Hawaii as an example. A ship that is not coastwise-qualified takes passengers from Los Angeles to several Hawaiian islands, lets them go ashore, and brings them back to Los Angeles, and that is a violation even though they end where they began.
The regulation, 19 CFR 4.80a, shows what a foreign stop changes. On a voyage that also calls at a nearby foreign port, the violation becomes leaving the ship at a U.S. port other than the one where you boarded. CBP names Ensenada as a nearby foreign port, and its matching example of a violation is a ship that sails from Los Angeles to Hawaii and Ensenada, then lets passengers off in San Diego. So the cruise must end in San Francisco.
Every Hawaii sailing here calls at Ensenada on the last full day before home. The time ashore depends on the date.
| Sailings | Time in Ensenada |
|---|---|
| Ruby Princess, most sailings to April 2027 | Noon to 5pm |
| Ruby Princess, 29 November 2026 | 7am to noon |
| Ruby Princess, 25 September 2027 to 9 April 2028 | 9am to 5pm |
| Ruby Princess, 19 October 2028 | Noon to 5pm |
| Carnival | 3pm to 8pm |
Our Mexico guide describes Ensenada as a port.
When do cruises to Hawaii leave San Francisco?
Between September and April. No Hawaii cruise on this schedule leaves from May to August, when Ruby Princess and the Carnival ships are sailing to Alaska. Princess says its Hawaii cruises sail from September through April.
Ruby Princess runs from November 2026 to April 2027, from late September 2027 to April 2028, and again from October 2028. Carnival's trips leave in mid-September, at the end of each Alaska season.
Some dates fall over the holidays. Princess sells the sailing of 26 December 2026 as its 16-Day Hawaiian Islands Holiday cruise, back on 11 January 2027. The sailing of 14 December 2027 spends Christmas Day at sea on the way home, and the one of 30 December 2027 is at sea over New Year.
The National Weather Service in Honolulu treats October through April as Hawaii's wet season and May through September as the dry season, so most of these trips fall in the wet season. It gives 1 June to 30 November as the Central Pacific hurricane season, which covers the September, October and November sailings. Our season guide shows what else leaves in those months.
How much is a Hawaii cruise from San Francisco?
On 3 November 2026 a 16-night trip on Ruby Princess started at $1,124 per person and a 15-night trip on Carnival at $1,716. Those are the lowest fares that day for the cheapest cabin listed, with taxes and port fees included, and they change often.
| Length | Lowest fare | Lowest per night |
|---|---|---|
| 16 nights, Princess | $1,124 | $70 |
| 15 nights, Carnival | $1,716 | $114 |
When we wrote this on 3 November 2026, the long Hawaii trips cost less per night than the short ones. On 3 November 2026 the lowest Hawaii fare worked out at $70 a night, against $100 for Alaska and $128 for the short trips to Baja.
Two weeks also multiplies the extras. When we checked on 3 November 2026, Carnival's recommended gratuity was $17 a day per guest in a standard cabin, which is $510 for two people on 15 nights by our arithmetic. The port says it provides no parking at the cruise terminals, so if you drive, our parking guide covers the lots nearby and what 16 nights there involves.
Can you take a one-way cruise from San Francisco to Hawaii?
Not one that ends in Hawaii. The same rule applies. Boarding in San Francisco and leaving the ship in Honolulu is carriage between two U.S. ports, and CBP's guide gives boarding in San Francisco and leaving in Seattle as its first example of a violation.
One-way voyages do pass through Hawaii and carry on to Tahiti. Azamara Quest leaves on 5 January 2027 for 18 nights to Papeete, with an overnight in Honolulu, then Kauai and Kona, Moorea and Bora Bora. Seven Seas Splendor leaves on 6 January 2028 for 17 nights to Papeete, calling at Honolulu, Kauai, Kahului, Hilo, Bora Bora and Huahine. Each spends five days at sea before Honolulu and needs a flight home from Tahiti.
Our South Pacific page lists them. On 3 November 2026 they started at $2,549 per person, and Azamara also sells the same departure as much longer voyages to Sydney and Hong Kong.
What documents do you need for a Hawaii cruise from San Francisco?
A round trip from San Francisco is what CBP calls a closed-loop cruise. U.S. citizens may present a government-issued photo ID with proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate. CBP adds that you may still be asked for a passport by the countries the ship visits, here Mexico at Ensenada, and that you should check with your cruise line. Our documents guide covers the rest.
